PASTORAL CARE FOR THE UNEMPLOYED

The workless can obviously suffer from frustration, and pastoral care at such a time can be helpful. Their condition can affect them domestically, socially and spiritually. It is also hard to bear when they are accused of malingering.

The Church leadership should maintain a constant good relationship with them, encouraging them in their search for work. Fellow Christians should also be on the look-out for any job vacancies. I know one minister who told his unemployed members to 'pray themselves into a job'...and it worked! The Church can also consider helping financially or in kind where appropriate.

Where a job is not quickly found, the waiting time should be constructively used. There may be work in the house and garden, correspondence courses to enrich the mind and help prepare for future work. Churches and Charities are always looking for helpers, and it must be pointed out that because such work may not be remunerated, it does not mean that it is not valuable.
