A BIBLICAL OVERVIEW

It always helps when we take a look at the bigger picture - our place in the world. The Bible makes it clear that the human race was created in the image of God(1), which means that there are certain characteristics built into our personalities, the elements of which reflect the character and personality of the Divine.

God was the first 'Worker', and after completing His creation tasks, He saw that everything was 'very good'(2). In other words He was happy with the results, and this feeling of fulfilment with a job well done is also repeated in us.

The garden of Eden(3), the first home of mankind had a perfect environment for ideal people, but it will be noted in Scripture that even in that idyllic place Adam had work to do. He had to manage the estate and take care of the garden, but because of his excellent physical condition the work was not toilsome. It was a delightful duty, and if anyone thinks that the life to come will be a prolonged session of inactivity, he should be warned (or heartened as the case may be) that Heaven is a place where God's servants will serve Him(4). There is a hymn that anticipates the condition. It says 'praise shall our nobler powers employ'(5). Notice the word employ there!
