THE PHILOSOPHY OF WORK

Work is good for us on several counts, and our experience agrees. It occupies our time and calls for us to develop our interests and skills. The old adage that 'the Devil finds work for idle hands to do' is all too true. Man has a certain creativity in labour and thought, and as we have noted, the economy of the country depends upon labour in all its forms.

The New Testament charter is altruistic in reminding Christians that they 'serve the Lord Christ'(9), so the ultimate Master to whom we are responsible is God. I know a man who was a bus driver before he retired, and one day he was commended by the manager for his work. He was punctual, he kept his bus clean and there were no complaints. The manager then asked him what was his motivation for this. He replied, 'I am a Christian and I do my work as if I was working for God', then looking at the manager he added, 'and you get the benefit!'

A further result of this philosophy follows logically; that if we believe that we are serving God in our various occupations and professions, we will do our best, even when the boss is not around(10).
