TRENDS THAT REVERSE THE PRINCIPLE OF NATIONAL
SOVEREIGNTY
Any confederation of peoples results in a lessening of the
diversity of each, and such conglomerations have often boded ill for society. I
understand from a psychologist that there is a phenomenon known as a group
spirit which can take control of groupings causing then to initiate projects
that can become unmanageable. As an example in a local setting, a gang of
youths will perpetrate vandalism, which as individuals they would never do.
When brought up in court the defence is usually that their behaviour was quite
out of character.
Be that as it may there is a striking verse in the Bible
referring to a Christian's life before conversion. "In time past you walked
according to the course of this world...the spirit that now worketh in the
children of disobedience". Large groupings could be vulnerable to such
influences and even unwittingly allow the secular to thwart the purposes of
God.
REASONS FOR CONFEDERACIES
Combines and alliances are formed for varied reasons, and
they are not all altruistic. Sometimes it is from fear. "What will happen to us
if we are left out?" So, as the old adage goes, "if you can't beat them, join
them". For others it is self-interest. They all want their share of the cake,
as when a shopkeeper who would prefer to close on Sundays decides to open to
compete with the others.
