Spirit of Wisdom

1 Cor 12:8 "To one there is given through the Spirit the message of wisdom," During my late teenage years I used to have a habit of collecting the "Peanuts" cartoon strip out of one of our National Papers, and one of them happens to be one of my favourites and goes something like this. Snoopy is looking for something in the desert and he is saying "Digging for rare Egyptian coins can be very exciting.

If you find the right ones, you could make a fortune all it takes is faith and patience, unless of course, it suddenly occurs to you that you’re in the wrong desert" Having wisdom by definition can mean several things, the Oxford Dictionary describes it as having soundness of Judgement in matters relating to life and conduct, enlightenment, learning. It can also mean that someone is either prudent or sensible and having knowledge.

When we come to this verse in 1 Corinthians 12, we are talking about the message of Wisdom, meaning someone who has a knowledge of the mysteries of the Gospels, and an ability to explain them. The Lord in his great plan of things, and through the inspiration of his Spirit gives men and women of God the wisdom of explaining the mysteries of his word. We need men and women with this gifting especially in this day and age, where people around are looking for something to fill that need in their lives, the need for purpose and a direction, that fulfilment that can only come from the redeeming sacrifice on the Cross. This world of ours has a great need for the Wisdom and Knowledge of God to be preached, not in a way that pleases, but that cuts through all the untruths that is taught, with sound doctrines and teaching that helps us to understand our relationship with God.

Paul, in his second letter to Timothy clearly shares his feelings on this matter when writing to Timothy about his calling. 2 Tim 4:3 (NIV) For the time will come when men will not put up with sound doctrine. Instead, to suit their own desires, they will gather around them a great number of teachers to say what their itching ears want to hear. Yes there is a great desert out there, but there is only one place where you will find the true wisdom of God, and that is in his word.
