a) Human Beings are special - they alone are made in Gods image. Genesis describes how God Himself created men and women "in His Own Image". He also planned how they should act as His deputies on earth, looking after it and everything on it. The value that God sets on human life was demonstrated again when Jesus Christ was born; by becoming a man, God showed the infinite value He has for us (John 1:14). As His "deputies" we are not to overrule Gods sovereignty at the beginning (or end) of life. We are told that matters of birth and death are to be left to God (Job, Hebrews 9:27, Matthew 10:29-31). We all depend totally on God for our existence (Acts 17:28).
b) Where life begins - what the Bible says. The Bible talks about people personally before they are born (Psalms 51:5, 139:13-16, Jeremiah 1:4, Galatians 1:15). The Bible very specifically emphasises that the Incarnation began at the miraculous conception of Jesus within the virgin Mary (Matthew 1:18-21, Luke 1: 30-35). Christ was fully human from the moment of conception. As Christ began His human life at the moment of conception, so do we. For we are told that He was like us in every way (Hebrews 2:14-17, 4:15). Conception (i.e. fertilisation) is therefore the moment at which Christians consider human life to start.
c) What God says about destroying human life. The Bible makes it clear that it is wrong, a crime, a sin, to destroy intentionally another human being - including unborn human beings. Killing an innocent human being - murder, in other words - deserves the death penalty says the Bible because it is destroying someone who bears Gods image (Genesis 9:6, Exodus 20:13, Leviticus 24:17). No innocent life is expendable. Killing innocent life is always wrong!
